Dentistry Library subject guide updated

Over the past few weeks I have been working on the Dentistry subject guide, re-arranging it so that the content is more accessible and key resources are more visible.

New features include:

1. Popular Resources - 6 key resources for the dental student, ranging from Medline and the Library Catalogue to the MDConsult and StatRef! dental e-book collections.
2. Databases - a list of databases relevant to dentistry.
3. Internet Guide - The individual sections of the Internet guide are now listed on the Subject guide, so that they are more accessible. Sections include Evidence-based Dentistry, Dental Statistics, Images for Teaching and Learning, as well as Clinical Protocols and Guidelines.
4. E-books & E-journals - Lists of e-books and e-journals in dentistry.
5. Research and Information Skills - includes new short & interactive learning tools from the iResearch series.
6. DentistryLibrary@Sydney - this blog!
   

Feedback on the new structure is welcome, so please let me know what you think so that it can be improved. Is it intuitive, does it contain the resources you need for your research or studies? This information will aid in the improvement of the guide.

Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery now available online!

The Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery [JOMS] is now available online to the staff and students of the University of Sydney. It is available from Volume 53 (1995) and complements the Library's print holdings.

JOMS, which has an ISI journal impact factor of 1.252, is one of the more important journals in oral and maxillofacial surgery, and is in high demand by dentistry postgrads at Sydney. It has coverage of new techniques and ideas in oral and maxillofacial surgery, and provides practice-applicable articles which have the aim of developing the methodologies used to conduct surgery in this area.

Evidence-based Dentistry Internet Guide updated

Prompted by several enquiries of the last fortnight from fourth year Dentistry students (BDent4) undergoing their PEARLS I have updated the Evidence-based Dentistry Internet guide. You can find more information about PEARLS at The Faculty of Medicine Evidence-based Medicine program site, but basically it is an activity where students are tasked with identifying a question that has arisen out of a clinical situation, formulating an answerable question, developing a search strategy and conducting a search with the aim of identifying a quality research article. They then appraise the article and present it to their staff and their peers.

The EBD guide now contains links to relevant organisations which have information about evidence-based dentistry, links to University of Sydney databases which have EBD content, as well as several other databases and tools, and an excellent set of online guides and tutorials from both the University of Sydney and from universities in the United States.

One tutorial I recently added is from the Cushing/Whitney Medical Library at Yale University, on the subject of Formulating your questions using PICO. This is just one of a series of tutorials, most of which focus on using the new OvidSP interface.

New Publications by Faculty of Dentistry Staff and Students

The following paper has been added to PubMed in the last 30 days:

Sae-Lee D, Whittle T, Peck CC, Forte AR, Klineberg IJ, Murray GM. Experimental jaw-muscle pain has a differential effect on different jaw movement tasks. Journal of Orofacial Pain. 2008 Winter;22(1):15-29.

This covers the procedures required by the ABIM (American Board of Internal Medicine). It includes illustrations and multi-media for each procedure. It provides self-directed procedures training and testing.
