Access full-text articles easier & faster

Pubget makes getting access to full-text documents easier and faster. Instead of search results requiring several clicks to view the papers through PubMed, with Pubget, the search results are the papers. Pubget allows you to save, manage and share papers. On campus you can open the PDFs straight away. Off campus you will need to login with your Unikey to get the full text.

If Sydney University doesn't subscribe to the full text you'll see the abstract, and in the full web version only, links to order it.

An amazing referencing tool

Griffith University created a very cool, easy to use online Referencing Tool with examples in the AGPS Harvard, APA, MLA, and Vancouver styles for a number of media types and heaps of different formats.

PubMed and beyond

They are many alternative interfaces to PubMed offering different search and retrieval methods currently not available within PubMed. This free article PubMed and beyond: a survey of web tools for searching biomedical literature looks at and reviews 28 web tools for searching the biomedical literature and compares them to PubMed and each other and has a website dedicated to tracking existing tools and future advances in the area of biomedical literature search tools. Not only does the article look at these 28 interfaces but it also looks at the recent changes to PubMed that were often influenced by these and other outside interfaces.

Google Scholar H-Index calculator

Just point your browser to scholar.google.com and make a query! Once installed, this Firefox addon displays on top of Google Scholar result pages, the corresponding h-index, g-index, e-index and other measures of impact for the submitted query. Make sure you read the disclaimer on the download page.

Better Oral Health in Residential Care

"In 2007 a multi-state consortium, led by the South Australian Dental Service, was funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing to develop an evidence based model called Better Oral Health in Residential Care. This model promotes a team approach with general medical practitioners, registered nurses, care workers and dental professionals sharing responsibility for one or more of four key processes: oral health assessment, oral health care planning, daily oral hygiene and dental treatment. Early Childhood Oral Health learning module

Early childhood oral health management skills are the focus of an online learning module from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP). Self-guided instructional material: Fixed Partial Denture

Developed by Dr Ranier M. Adarve from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, Fixed Partial Denture is a self-contained learning material designed primarily for dental students in preclinical programs as they learn and develop their skills in tooth preparation for fixed partial denture. It contains the outline of the step by step procedures as well as photos that easily guide learners as they practice the skill. It also provides learners information regarding the clinical implications of the procedure, thereby providing context and relevance. The use of this material is most beneficial for students who are new to the procedure, and want to learn at their own pace. It is also designed for faculty members to use the material to augment their teaching resources for students. Expand Role of New Oral Health Professionals: IOM Report

A recently released Institute of Medicine report called "Advancing Oral Health in America" faults the US government for inconsistent efforts to address oral health. "For decades, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has shown a fluctuating commitment to making oral health a national priority," the report says. "Today, oral diseases remain prevalent across the country, especially in vulnerable and underserved populations." The report divided its findings into the following recommendations:

•A new oral health leader for an oral health initiative;
•More evidence-based preventive services;
•More public education about oral health, especially preventing disease;
•More training for oral health professionals, especially about cultural issues;
•Research into compensation for oral healthcare through Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children's Health Insurance Program;
•Better sharing of data about oral healthcare among agencies; and
•Annual reporting on the progress of the new oral health initiative by HHS agency heads.

Free Dental X-rays webinar on 18 May

Learning Centre May program

The Learning Centre helps students develop the generic learning and communication skills that are necessary for university study and beyond. Their free workshops are open to all enrolled University of Sydney students and include exam preparation, presentation and communication skills, academic reading and writing skills and so on.
